The Lost Colors of the Army

Did you know the Terracotta Warriors weren’t always the muted gray we see today? When they were discovered in the 1970s, archaeologists were amazed to find them adorned with vibrant hues of reds, purples, greens, blues, and blacks, bringing life to what is now a static display.

“Within minutes of air exposure, the lacquer curled and flaked, taking most of the color with it.”

This transformation led to a heartbreaking loss of color, including the stunning Chinese Purple, a unique pigment created over 2,000 years ago. Alongside other natural pigments like cinnabar red and malachite green, these colors reflected the warriors’ imposing presence.

To preserve the remaining fragments, modern conservators are employing digital scanning and hyperspectral imaging. This cutting-edge technology allows for the creation of digital pigment maps that facilitate accurate AR restorations, revealing the Terracotta Army as it once was: vibrant and commanding.
